Meet Dr. Santos Da Silva

Scholar | PhD and Master’s Admissions Consultant

Dr. Karen Santos Da Silva brings doctoral training, published scholarship, and more than fifteen years of academic teaching experience to comprehensive graduate admissions consulting.

She holds a Ph.D. from New York University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley. Her teaching career includes Barnard College, Columbia University, and Sarah Lawrence College.

Her scholarly work encompasses academic articles, a book chapter, and translation. She is the translator and co-editor of Rousseau between Nature and Culture: Philosophy, Literature, and Politics, published by De Gruyter.

That experience brings firsthand knowledge of rigorous academic work: developing substantive questions, engaging with scholarship, supporting an argument, and communicating complex ideas precisely. At The Admit Lab, Dr. Santos Da Silva applies that intellectual discipline to the decisions and materials that shape PhD and master’s applications.

The strongest material in an application is not always the most obvious accomplishment on a résumé. It may be a research problem that changed your thinking, a professional responsibility that revealed a gap in your training, or a connection between experiences you have not yet articulated.

Dr. Santos Da Silva works with applicants to uncover that substance and determine how it supports their next academic step.

For PhD applicants, this means examining how research interests have developed, what preparation supports them, and which questions warrant further investigation. For master’s applicants, it means establishing a convincing relationship between previous experience, the proposed degree, and future goals.

Her approach combines close discussion with substantive feedback. The work is to identify what matters, examine the reasoning behind it, and make its significance clear to someone encountering your application for the first time.

Comprehensive guidance from strategy to submission

Dr. Santos Da Silva guides applicants through The Admit Lab’s structured process, connecting program choices, application materials, and interview preparation.

Establish your academic direction

Begin with a careful examination of your background and objectives. Clarify your research interests or professional goals, identify evidence of readiness, and determine which aspects of your candidacy need further development.

Build a purposeful program list

Evaluate programs in relation to the work you want to pursue. For doctoral applicants, this includes exploring potential faculty alignment and research environments. For master’s applicants, it includes examining curriculum, opportunities for specialization, and the degree’s relevance to future plans.

Develop a cohesive application

Create statements of purpose, personal statements, supplemental essays, and CVs or résumés that contribute distinct evidence while supporting a consistent overall case. Recommender planning considers who can speak credibly and specifically about your abilities.

Prepare for interviews and final review

Practice explaining your interests, discussing your experience, and answering questions about program fit. Final review examines the application for consistency, completeness, and responsiveness to each program’s requirements.

Throughout a comprehensive engagement, Dr. Santos Da Silva works directly with you through discussion, feedback, and revision. Each stage builds on an understanding of your background, so individual documents remain connected to the larger application strategy.

Academic experience behind the guidance

Dr. Santos Da Silva has taught at Barnard College since 2010. Her academic service includes undergraduate and international student advising and membership on Barnard’s Honors Committee.

These responsibilities complement her scholarship with sustained experience helping students navigate academic expectations and consequential educational choices.

Her work as a scholar and translator also brings exacting attention to language and argument. An ambitious claim needs evidence. A research interest needs context. An experience needs interpretation before its significance becomes apparent.

Dr. Santos Da Silva’s feedback addresses those questions alongside organization, nuance, and style. Applicants remain the authors of their work, with guidance that strengthens both their reasoning and their expression.

“At The Admit Lab, we look beyond an applicant’s credentials to understand the ideas, experience, and potential behind them. Dr. Santos Da Silva brings the perspective of a published scholar to that work. She helps applicants recognize the significance of what they have done and develop what they want to pursue next, with the depth and precision that serious academic work demands.”
